Ever since bombs and missiles began hitting Islamic State targets in Iraq on Aug. 8, U.S. Central Command and its Air Force component, Air Forces Central Command, have kept a running total of the number of the number of airstrikes against both Islamic State and the Khorasan Group, the location and how many individual flights, known as sorties, have taken place.
Just this morning, Centcom released the latest hit list. U.S. fighter, attack and remotely piloted aircraft conducted 10 airstrikes Thursday and today.
In Iraq, five airstrikes south and southwest of Kirkuk destroyed three Islamic State Humvees and one Islamic State vehicle, disabled two Islamic State armed vehicles and damaged one Islamic State mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle. One airstrike west of Baghdad destroyed an Islamic State guard shack, an armed vehicle and a bunker. One airstrike near Al Qaim destroyed four Islamic State armed vehicles, a command and control node and a checkpoint.
In Syria, three airstrikes south and southeast of Dayr Az Zawr destroyed four Islamic State tanks and damaged another.
Here’s the first tally on sorties over Syria and the latest information about Iraq to date.
As of Sept. 24, there have been 33 airstrikes by U.S. and coalition forces against targets in Syria since the air campaign began there Monday, according to Capt. Malinda Singleton, the AFCENT spokeswoman. She did not break the figure out by individual nations.
There have been a total of 3,750 sorties flown over both countries, according to Singleton.
There have been 101 combat sorties over Syria. All told, 261 munitions have been released in Syria, including 47 Tomahawks launched from the sea.
So far in Iraq, there have been 209 airstrikes by U.S. and coalition forces, with 1,424 combat sorties and 359 munitions released.
Between the two campaigns, there have been 1,289 tanker sorties – flown by jets like the KC-135 Stratotanker from MacDill Air Force Base featured in a Centcom video – 638 ISR sorties and 357 other types of sorties.
There have also been 42 humanitarian aid sorties.
Singleton said figures on the support sorties were compiled for both Iraq and Syria and not released separately for operational security and because some aircraft can support missions over both countries on a single sortie.
