Suspect Knocked One Unconscious
A domestic violence arrest spun out of control early Saturday morning, according to Tampa Police, with one officer knocked unconscious.
The trouble started shortly after 1 a.m. when officers went to 4004 N. Branch Ave., Apt. C, to respond to a call that a man broke into an apartment and attacked his wife and another man, according to a police report.
Officer Steve Magnan arrived and found the suspect, Anthony Powell, 28 and his wife, Lahkoyah, 27, the report stated.
This is what happened next, according to the report:
Powell ran from Magnan, who deployed his Taser, hitting Powell, who fell to the ground.
Powell got up and repeatedly punched Magnan in the face, and Magnan fought back.
Master Patrol Officer Tony Trigo arrived to help and Powell pushed Trigo, who fell and hit the back of his head on the concrete.
Powell ran back to the apartment. As he approached the front porch, Officer Ryan Jacques used his Taser on Powell, but it had no effect. Powell barricaded himself inside the apartment along with his wife and two children, who were also inside.
Magnan and Jacques then noticed that Trigo – a 24-year veteran — was unconscious and not breathing. The officers could not detect a pulse.
They both initiated CPR and resuscitated Trigo, who was taken to Saint Joseph’s Hospital where he was listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon.
Magnan’s arms and legs were cut and scraped, and some of his teetch were loosened. He was treated at Tampa General Hospital and is in good condition.
Powell was arrested and charged with two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of obstructing or opposing an officer with violence, two counts of burglary of an occupied structure, two counts of kidnapping – all felonies — and one count of domestic violence, a misdemeanor. He was also charged with failure to appear on drug and domestic battery charges from prior arrests.
He was being held at Orient Road Jail. No bail has been set.
